The month of May has been a rewarding month for the foundation. Not only did the children receive a special gift from two Canadian volunteers, but the fruit of the volunteer program can be seen through out the school.
A Canadian Donation
|
Two volunteers from Canada, Susan and Catherine, arrived at the beginning of May. It is always a treat when new volunteers arrive, but these two brought extra smiles to the children. They arrived with a large bag of medication for the doctor to use in the clinic. Susan, who is a surgical nurse, was able to aid the foundation nurses as well. Their generosity was very helpful in the caring for the medical needs of the children.
Catherine works as a social worker in Quebec. Before coming to volunteer, she was able to raise money enlisting the help of the children she works with. About 50 children, from the ages of 7 to 12, worked to raise over $300.00 for the children at our school. The doctor and administrator helped Susan and Catherine to put this money to good use.

They were able to buy shoes, backpacks, toys and a table and chairs. The shoes and backpacks were especially treasued by the children. Kids wore their new backpacks around all day with pride, and were happy to have shoes that offered more protection than flip-flops.

The two year old classroom was host to a little gathering where the staff was able to show their thanks.
It was a touching scene when the teachers showed their thanks by presenting flowers, candy, and art created by the children. On behalf of the foundation and the children, we want to thank Susan, Catherine, and all of the doners, for your generous contribution. We want you to know that you have made a difference!
Let the Construction Begin!
The first grade classroom, left, and the kitchen, right. |
Construction on a new kitchen and first grade classroom began in December 2005. Due to lack of funding, the building construction was halted. The kitchen and first grade classroom stood untouched for four months with no foundation, waist high walls, and no roof. Luckily, the volunteer program has brought hope to the foundation expansion. Thanks to volunteer donations and labor, we now have enough money to see the completion of both new buildings.

Volunteers not only funded the building materials and construction tools, but were also instrumental in the construction. While hired Bolivians finished the brick walls, and directed the work groups, volunteers removed earth from inside the new structures in order to lay the foundation. Once the dirt was removed, large, round rocks were placed on the ground. The next phase of construction will be pouring concrete to creat the foundation for both buildings. The buildings aren't finished yet, but at the rate our volunteer program is growing we will finish these two buildings by July.
